Imitation Posted on June 7, 2014 by Nate.
About every week, I receive a forwarded email from the wife, filled with an abundance of knowledge about what our baby is learning for the upcoming weeks ahead. It’s amazing how we take so many things for granted. Especially the small fundamental skills that we have been using for our entire lives. Before becoming a Dad, if someone would have come up to me and said, “Nate, our baby is following our movements with his own eyes!!”, I probably would have laughed my ass off and avoided the ‘weirdo’ the next time passing by the water cooler. Now? This shit is exciting! High five!
So, the topic for this week was imitation. How your baby will start to imitate faces you make at them. It was a sign of them developing. In fact, it’s said to be their foremost tool for learning. So, my mission was to manipulate as many faces of emotion I could out of the little guy. Actually, it was more like all the emotions wrapped up in one, with the tongue sticking out and topped with crossed eyes. Great…the little guy must be on the slow end of learning. He isn’t amused nor even trying to copy me. Actually, I realized it was too advanced for him to look like a complete idiot, so I eased it back a bit and smiled really big. BAM! The kid’s a GENIUS! I even got a little chuckle out of him too! Bonus!
Next up, The Frown. Sticking my bottom lip out as far as possible, pulling down with the jaw, I’m thinking I am doing a pretty good Popeye impression right now. Now, baby’s turn. Eye’s kinda popped open, with a sense of alarm, then slowly went to a straining face. His face started getting all beat red, and I’m thinking, “This kid is already winning grammys!” His head looking like a pimple about to pop, and then he just rips one right in the palm of my hand. Luckily the good ol’ pampers kept it all in. I laughed so hard while trying to maintain my hold on the little dude. As I look up at his face, I see facial expression #1 coming back into play, The Smile. Nice work, little man!
